About

Tessa’s work explores the vivid and surreal nature of hypnagogic hallucinations. These types of visions occur when a person is transitioning between being awake and asleep. Most people have probably experienced a hypnagogic hallucination at least once in their life. Tessa has experienced these types of visions since she was 15 years old, often 2-3 times a week. In the moment, the hallucinations are so real and vivid. But, as fast as they come, they quickly fade and become something like a memory of a dream.

Tessa uses painting to visualize her experiences. In her work, she uses vivid colors to evoke an emotional response that replicates the emotions she feels when she hallucinates and allows the viewer to feel what she feels. These are meant to be representative of the sensation of hallucinating while still incorporating her own personal artistic style. Tessa also utilizes her art to help promote positive attention and conversations about mental health.

Tessa grew up in rural Chilton, Wisconsin. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point in 2025 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts.
